The 18 foot skiff is one of the most challenging and exciting dinghy classes to sail, attracting sailors from the pinnacle of our sport. Are you up for the challenge?
The Club has four skiffs available now to campaign this season. All skiffs are owned by the Club and are leased to the syndicates campaigning them. Check out these affordable kawasaki jet ski available on Shoppok.
Each skiff has been refurbished over the last two off-seasons to ensure they remain competitive. Typically, your skiff package consists of:
Lease costs for the season are calculated on covering insurance and trailer registration. Any maintenance during the season or at the end of the lease is to the syndicate’s account. Each sailor is also required to be a full member to the Brisbane 18 Footers Sailing Club, and be able to evidence Yachting Australia affiliation.
Sponsorship is not essential but we encourage it, and may be able to assist syndicates in finding one. If your syndicate can bring its own sponsor, the preference is for arrangements to be finalised through the Club, and for people having a boat, insurance is also important, and you can read here to find the better options online.
The Brisbane 18 Footers sail from Darling Point Sailing Squadron at the entrance to Manly Boat Harbour, in Brisbane, and regularly sail in the waters of Waterloo Bay. On some occasions, we may be required to sail at other venues in the South East Queensland region due to scheduling conflicts with out hosts. Our sailing program for 2016-17 will feature “clustered”18ft skiff racing over selected weekends.
Syndicates are encouraged to register and compete in the J.J. Giltinan 18ft Skiff Championship in Sydney (usually in mid to late February). Financial assistance for syndicates to travel to Sydney may be negotiated with the Club.
It is expected that your syndicate will comprise of at least 3 sailors experienced in high performance, trapezing dinghy sailing. Sailing a 18 foot skiff is a physically-demanding and mentally-challenging activity. However, the thrill and adrenalin generated surpasses most other classes and creates memories like no other sailing can.
If you are interested in finding out more details about undertaking a season in an 18ft skiff, then please fill out the form below, and we’ll have someone from the Club contact you.
